DAYS OF '47 QUEEN FOR 2016!

As some of you know, I am a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) & the president of one of our DUP Companies here in St. George. Daughters of Utah Pioneers camps sponsor young women of Pioneer heritage to run for Royalty for the Days of '47 Parade on the 24th of July in Salt lake City. They are chosen on the basis of a written essay on their pioneer ancestry & reign for a year. WELL - the new Queen for this next year is from St. George, & we had her speak at our DUP Company Convention here Wednesday, April 27th. She was born & raised here; her parents are Christine & Monte Hansen. She went to West Elementary & graduated in 2013 from Dixie High School. She was Miss St. George in 2012 & says that 'she has red dirt in her blood.' She sings opera, &  speaks Italian, & knows Italian AND American Sign Language. Not only is she the Queen, she also won the Annie Taylor Hyde (daughter of John Taylor & the woman that spearheaded the forming of Daughters of Utah Pioneers in 1901) award, which is voted on by the other Royalty Candidates. (Think Miss Congeniality in the Miss America contest!) She just returned from a mission in Italy for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 4 weeks ago.
Baylee Rose Hogan is an absolute delight!

Find below the 'essay' (short & succinct) that won her the Title of Queen of Day's of '47 - 2016!

"I was born in 1995. Patience Sybil Groves was born in 1841. Despite being more than 150 years apart, our challenges are similar. Patience left her home to travel to a land uncharted. Inspired by her pioneer bravery, I left my home to defend her faith and mine in Italy for 18 months. She faced with courage the persecution of her time. My generation and I face battles of opinion and moral opposition. Their stories can give us strength to conquer our trials. Their example and memory we must hold dear. Blessed honored pioneers."
